We use equipment that can automatically remove dust spots, adjust colors, and reduce the appearance of photographic grain in the scanned image.  These technologies, developed by Applied Science Fiction Inc. now owned by Kodak(http://www.asf.com) are collectively known as ICE3 (pronounced ice-cubed).  Because the scan takes longer when these technologies are employed, the cost is higher.  However, they can also dramatically improve an otherwise ruined image.  Upon request, we will scan and e-mail to you up to three images of your choice from your order with and without each of the technologies employed, so you can see the the effect and make an informed decision whether the extra service is worthwhile for your photos.

Digital ICE™

Digital ICE detects and removes dust spots and scratches from the scanned image.  Many slides and negatives have dust and scratch defects that are difficult to detect with the naked eye, yet that will be very clear on the scanned image.  Digital ICE can only be employed with color slides and negatives, and newer Black & White chromogenic films (C41 process), but not with traditional silver-halide BW films.  While Digital ICE can often be employed successfully with Kodak Kodachrome™ slides, some slides - particularly those lacking red-channel content, like underwater scenes - may lose detail.  We will honor requests to use Digital ICE with Kodak Kodachrome slides, but we can not warrant the results.

Digital ROC™

Think of Digital ROC as Reconstruction of Color.  Digital ROC can take faded and otherwise off color images and make them more pleasing to the eye.  Digital ROC can also be used with Traditional silver-halide and chromogenic (C41 process) Black & White films, as well as Kodak Kodachrome slides.  When Digital ROC is used with Black & White film, the image is scanned and stored as a color image, and ROC acts to adjust for under or over exposure.  You can subsequently use a program like Adobe Photoshop to convert the color representation in the image file back to black and white.

Digital GEM™

The image in developed photographic film consists of small particles of silver halide - the faster the ISO speed of the film, the larger the particles.  These particles produce the 'graininess' often visible in enlarged photographic images.  Digital GEM analyzes the pattern of these grain particles, and reduces their appearance in the final image.  As with Digital ROC, Digital GEM can also be used with Traditional silver-halide and chromogenic (C41 process) Black & White films, as well as Kodak Kodachrome slides.  When Digital GEM is used with Black & White film, the image is scanned and stored as a color image.  You can subsequently use a program like Adobe Photoshop to convert the color representation in the image file back to black and white.
